STATEMENT FROM MARY ALLEN ON COMMITTEE PASSAGE OF BILL STRIPPING HEAT PROTECTIONS FROM WORKERS

Evansville, IN – In response to the committee passage of a bill sponsored by Rep. Mark Messmer that strips heat protections from workers, Congressional candidate Mary Allen issued the following statement:

“No matter what kind of work we do, we all deserve safe working conditions. Worker safety protections are what our unions fought for and too many workers died for. As the daughter of a union worker, I’m proud of the immense progress we made as a nation through the labor movement – both in negotiated contracts and legal protections.

“Mark Messmer’s bill to roll back heat protections for workers directly threatens those very workplace safety standards that workers fought so hard to obtain. Basic heat protections like access to adequate water and rest in the shade should not be controversial. 

“While some businesses already do make choices to protect their workers, a federal standard ensures that those protections aren’t dependent on the kindness of an employer. Public Citizen estimates that a comprehensive federal heat standard could prevent 50,000 heat-related injuries and illness each year. Those 50,000 people are worth a little extra paperwork.”
